Are Airboat Tours Safe in Summer Rain?
Short version: yes, summer airboat tours are safe, and yes, we run them in light rain. We don’t run during lightning. If a storm shows up mid-tour, we head back. Florida summer storms are short and predictable if you know what to look for, and our captains have been reading these skies for years. Here is how we make the call, and what happens to your booking if the weather doesn’t cooperate.
South Florida summer storm patterns
Once you understand the rhythm, summer in the Everglades stops feeling unpredictable.
Mornings stay clear, almost always. The marine layer burns off by 8 AM and the sky stays open until late morning. Storms build between 1 and 4 PM as heat and humidity climb. They hit hard, then they’re gone in 30 to 60 minutes. Multi-hour washouts are rare in June and July. The morning rule isn’t a marketing line, it’s how the weather actually behaves.
By 5 PM the storms have usually passed, but the captains don’t bet on a clean sunset slot in summer. We save those for winter.
How we decide before a tour
Three checks every morning.
NWS radar. We pull the National Weather Service radar 90 minutes before launch. If a cell is moving toward our area, we make the call early so you’re not driving to the dock for nothing.
Lightning tracker. We use a real-time lightning detection app. Industry-standard tools that show strikes within a mile in seconds. If anything is inside 8 miles, the boat doesn’t leave.
Captains read the sky from the dock. The original method, still works. A captain who’s been running these tours for years can see a storm building 20 minutes before the radar shows it clearly. That’s the call that closes the loop.
What happens if it starts raining mid-tour
Light rain, we keep going. Building storm, we head back.
Light rain: Poncho if you want one (we keep a few on the boat), otherwise carry on. Most summer rain on the marsh is brief and refreshing, especially in the heat.
Wind picks up, dark wall on the horizon: We turn around. The captain doesn’t ask the riders, the captain makes the call. We never push it because the customer wants the full 90.
Active lightning: We’re already on the way back. We don’t ride out lightning. Ever.
Lightning is the one hard line
Eight miles. That’s our line and we don’t cross it.
Below 8 miles, the boat stays at dock or returns to dock. No exceptions, no “we’ll risk it.” This is industry standard for a reason. Lightning travels faster than a fleeing storm, and an airboat on open water is the worst place to be when a strike lands.
The 8-mile rule is also how every responsible Florida tour operator runs. If anyone tells you they ride through lightning, find a different operator.
Reschedule and refund policy in plain English
If we cancel for weather, you owe nothing.
- Same-day reschedule if a slot is open. We waive the booking fee.
- Open-dated rebook if we can’t get you in same day. Use within a year.
- Full refund if you can’t reschedule. Process within 3 business days.
- No “credit card hold” weirdness. We don’t pre-authorize and hold deposits for weather cancellations.
The only situation where you owe is if you cancel last-minute on a day we’re running tours as scheduled. Standard 24-hour cancellation applies in that case.
Why morning bookings almost never cancel
Of the morning tours we’ve run in the last three summers, less than 5% got pushed for weather.
Storms build in afternoons, not mornings. 9 AM is the safest slot of the day. If you’re worried about cancellations, book the first ride.
Saturdays in late June, July, and August have the highest cancellation risk in the afternoon slots. Mornings on those same Saturdays stay clear over 95% of the time. The data is consistent year over year.
What to bring just in case
Three small items, big difference.
- Lightweight poncho. We have a few on the boat, but if you want guaranteed dry, pack your own.
- Dry bag for your phone. A zip-top freezer bag works fine if you don’t have a dedicated dry bag.
- Spare shirt in the car. Heat plus rain plus a 30-minute drive home, you’ll want it.
FAQ
Do you cancel for rain?
Light rain, no. Lightning or active storm, yes.
What’s your refund policy if weather cancels?
Free reschedule or full refund. Your call.
Can I reschedule the same day?
Yes, if a later slot is open. We’ll waive any fees.
Is the boat slippery in rain?
Slightly. We slow down and the deck has texture so it’s not a slip-and-slide. We’ve never had a fall on the boat from rain.
What about hurricane season?
Named storms cancel everything for days. We refund or rebook, no questions. If a tropical system is in the forecast within 72 hours of your booking, we’ll call you proactively.
How early do you make the weather call?
For morning tours, by 7 AM. For afternoon tours, by 11 AM. If we cancel, you get a call and a text, not just an email.
Book the morning slot, weather rarely wins
95% of summer morning tours run as scheduled. Pick a 9 AM and reserve.
